Late Rally Gives Maroons Split With CWRU

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago softball team rallied back from a three-run deficit late in game two and used a walk-off hit to salvage a doubleheader split with Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.

The Maroons ran their record to 10-12 and the Spartans moved to 21-10.

Game One – Case 3, UChicago 2

The visitors got on the board in the first inning with two outs thanks to a double and then a RBI single. The lead moved to 3-0 by the fourth inning thanks to a solo home run and sacrifice fly.

The Maroons got one back in the bottom half of the fourth when freshman first baseman Alyssa Stolmack blasted the first collegiate home run of her career. A dropped fly ball in the fifth inning allowed another UChicago run to score and pulled the home team to within 3-2.

Another Case error put the tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the Spartans got the final out immediately afterwards to get the win.

Junior pitcher Jordan Poole (4-5) threw all seven innings, totaling three runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. UChicago posted five hits and made one error. Junior outfielder Devan Parkison hit 2-for-4 from her leadoff spot.

Game Two – UChicago 6, Case 5

The third and sixth innings were action packed for both teams in game two. Case started out with a leadoff triple in the third and scored on a single. UChicago then went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the frame with a RBI groundout by Parkison and a RBI single from sophomore second baseman Anna Woolery.

The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but came up empty. The scenario repeated itself in the top of the sixth, and this time Case delivered a grand slam homer to go up 5-2.

It didn't take long for the Maroons to answer back. Senior pitcher Tabbetha Bohac stepped up in the bottom of the sixth and smacked her third home run of the year to left field. Freshman outfielder Sara Koniewicz doubled off the left field fence to drive in a runner from first base, and she came around to tie the game on Parkison's RBI single to shortstop.

The game went into extra innings deadlocked at 5-5. Sophomore shortstop Maggie O'Hara started the bottom of the ninth with a walk and moved to second base on a groundout. With two outs, Bohac provided the walk-off RBI single to center field to win the game 6-5.

Bohac threw all nine innings in the pitching circle and evened her season record at 3-3. Her pitching line featured five runs, nine hits, seven walks and three strikeouts. She also hit 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.

The Maroons racked up 15 hits and made one error on defense. Five different players finished with multiple hits. O'Hara led the way with a 3-for-4 performance in the batter's box. Junior third baseman Kathleen Kohm, freshman outfielder Molly Moran, Koniewicz and Bohac all tallied two hits apiece.
