Senior Adrienne White celebrated her 22ndbirthday going 6-for-9 at the plate with two doubles and five RBIs to lead the No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Principia College Thursday night in Elsah, Ill.
The Bears won game one 12-0 in six innings, and then posted an 18-0 victory in five innings in game two. Washington U. improved to 31-9 with the two wins, while Principia fell to 5-28.
White's six hits in the doubleheader sweep upped her career total to 200, third most in school history. She also moved into fourth in runs scored (124) and sixth in RBIs (130).
#12 WashU 12, Principia 0 (Six Innings) – Game One
Junior Annie Pitkin (19-5) picked up the win in game one tossing a complete-game no-hitter striking out 16. Pitkin struck out 16 of 19 batters faced, and increased her season total to 220. The no-hitter for Pitkin was her first of the season and third of her career.
WashU broke open a tie game in the third inning scoring seven runs on eight hits. Senior Alyssa Wilson, junior Brooke Hofer and sophomore Hannah Mehrle each had a pair of RBIs in the inning.
The Bears added five runs on five hits in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 12-0. Sophomore Janet Taylor drove in two runs with a single down the right field line, while Hofer, Mehrle and Wilson each had an RBI in the inning.
WashU had 17 hits in the game one victory, led by Mehrle's 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Sydney Caldwell (2-for-3, run scored), Hofer (2-for-4, three RBIs, run scored), Taylor (3-for-4, two RBIs, two runs scored) and Wilson (2-for-4, three RBIs) all had multi-hit games.
#12 WashU 18, Principia 0 (Five Innings) – Game Two
White went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored as Washington U. had a season-high 21 hits in game two. She recorded the 200th hit of her career with a single to center in the top of the fifth that drove in two runs.
Senior Paige Biles went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Caldwell (2-for-3, RBI, four runs scored), Hofer (2-for-2, three RBIs), Mehrle (2-for-3, two RBIs, run scored) freshman Hera Tang (2-for-2), Taylor (2-for-2, RBI, run scored) and freshman Melinique Walls(2-for-3, RBI, two runs scored) also had multi-hit games for WashU. Caldwell's four runs scored tied a single-game school record.
The Bears jumped on Principia early and often in game two as WashU scored five runs on six hits in the first. Mehrle had the big hit in the first inning, a single to right, that drove in two runs. The Bears added three runs in the second on an RBI single by Taylor and a two-RBI single by Hofer to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Freshman Mackenzie Gauden (6-1) picked up the win allowing two hits in three innings pitched, while freshman Maggie Clapp allowed one hit and recorded five strikeouts in two innings. Gauden has not allowed an earned run in 17 2/3 innings pitched, and lowered her ERA to 1.97.
Washington U. closes out a four-game roadtrip at Fontbonne University Friday, April 25. Game one is set for 5 p.m. at ABC Park. Fontbonne has won 17-striaght games and has a 25-9 overall record. The two teams split a doubleheader on March 29.
