No. 2 Emory Earns Two Wins Over Maryville

From Emory University Athletics

Freshman third baseman Lana Herrmann's leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth snapped a tie game and provided the No. 2-ranked Emory softball with a second-game win and a sweep of a doubleheader vs. Maryville College Thursday afternoon. The Eagles raised their winning streak to 16 games and boosted their overall record to 25-1 following 8-0 (5 inn.) and 4-3 triumphs over the Scotts who fell to 9-13.

Herrmann's solo blast capped an Emory comeback that saw it rally for the victory after trailing by a 3-0 margin. The Eagles knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly by freshman Cassie Baca pushing Herrmann home and a two-out, two-run RBI single by senior Melody Carter plating senior Alyssa Pollard and junior Taylor Forte. Herrmann, Forte and Carter each collected a pair of safeties with the Eagles finishing with seven hits. Senior pitcher Brittany File, the fourth of four Eagle hurlers, notched the win, her 19th in 20 decisions, tossing two scoreless innings of relief that saw her strike out four. File's 19 wins ties for the No. 5 spot on the program's seasonal ladder.

Emory peppered a pair of Maryville pitchers for 14 hits in the opener with Pollard, going 4-for-4 at the plate, her sixth multi-hit game of the campaign, with three runs scored. Baca, junior Amy Wray and sophomore Ashley Powers all hit safely twice while Carter and sophomore Janelle Turnquest each drove in two runs. Emory put up four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. The Eagles added three more runs in the fourth frame with a Turnquest two-bagger and a single by Wray scoring runs. Emory then scored once in the fifth and closed out the game with a single by Carter the game-ending RBI.  File started and went four innings, fanning eight, while freshman Toko Miller went the last inning.
