The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team came away with a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader sweep over Pomona-Pitzer. The Eagles raised their winning streak to 14 games and boosted their overall record to 23-1 following 9-1 (5 inn.) and 9-3 triumphs over the Sagehens who fell to 2-12.
In the finale of the day, senior center fielder Alyssa Pollard turned in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore second baseman Janelle Turnquest collected a pair of hits and five RBIs to spark the offensive attack. Holding a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, Emory blew the game wide open by plating six runs. Freshman designated hitter Tori Risner jump started the frame with a two-run homer, her third round tripper of the season, while Pollard's RBI single pushed Emory to a 6-2 lead.
After a walk to freshman Cassie Baca and a single by senior Melody Carter loaded the bases, Turnquest socked a bases-clearing double that closed out the Eagles' scoring. Emory pounded out 13 hits in the win, its 13th contest with double figures in that category. Senior Brittany File earned the win in the circle, her 17th in 18 decisions, after going 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run, three hits and striking out two.
Emory roared out the blocks with a six-run first inning in the opener, highlighted by a three-run homer by freshman third baseman Lana Herrmann, her fifth of the year. The Eagles scored two more runs in their next at bat when RBI singles by Baca and Carter extended their lead to 8-1. Pollard registered a pair of hits in three plate appearances while the Eagles had five different players drive in runs. File notched the win after starting and going the first three innings while freshman Madeline Maday hurled the last two frames.
Emory has already hit 32 home runs this year, good for the No. 4 spot on the school's seasonal chart.
