Emory Plays Long Ball In UAA Win Over Brandeis

From Emory University Athletics

The No. 4-ranked Emory softball team kept up its winning ways at the University Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, defeating Brandeis University in its lone action of the day.  The Eagles won their seventh straight contest and raised their overall record to 16-1 following a five-inning, 11-3 decision over the Judges.

Four Emory home runs accounted for 10 of the team's runs with the final score representing the seventh time this year that the Eagles had recorded double-figure runs. After a sacrifice fly by senior Melody Carter gave Emory a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Eagles' next batter, sophomore Janelle Turnquest blasted a three-run homer, her fifth of the campaign, to give Emory a 4-0 lead.  Freshman Lana Herrmann led off the second inning with a solo shot, her fourth round tripper, to extend the Eagles lead by a run.  The Eagles kept their hot bats going in the third with sophomore Ashley Powers delivering a three-run homer, while Carter finished out a four-RBI contest the next inning with a three-run homer.

Sophomore Audrey Weller drew the starting assignment in the circle and came away with her fourth win in as many decisions, tossing the first three innings while freshman Madeline Maday pitched in relief over the last two innings.
