NYU Sweeps Drew

NYU Sweeps Drew

From NYU Athletics

The New York University softball team swept Drew University in a home doubleheader played on Wednesday, April 27, at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.

NYU (19-15) squeaked by the Rangers (12-20) 4-3 in the opener before easing to a 9-3 win in the nitecap.

In the first game, Karissa Zubulake (6-3) held Drew scoreless until the seventh inning. When the Rangers mounted a rally, Sydni Holtz came in to get the final out and her second save of the season.

"Karissa threw well and Sydni did a great job closing out the game," said Head Coach Now-Allah James.

NYU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, two scoring on a triple from Kahala Bonsignore and the other on Dakota Damiani's RBI groundout.

"Kahala's hit was huge in helping our offense get going," James added.

The Violets scored their fourth, and what proved to be the winning run, on Sage Scheiwiller's RBI single in the sixth.

There was not much drama in game two, as NYU scored four runs in the second inning to gain a lead it never relinquished. The Rangers did score two in the third, but the Violets countered with a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to squelch any ideas of a comeback.

Diana King (6-3) went the distance, allowing only two earned runs while striking out seven. She also led the offense with three hits and three RBIs.

"In game two we had a great approach at the plate and really got going," James explained. "We struggled early offensively, but the pitching staff did a great job holding them down until the bats got going."

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

- Zubulake only allowed one earned run while striking out seven.

- Jacqueline Finn had a team-best two hits while also scoring a run.

- Marisa Bella and Claire Stefanelli also scored runs for the Violets.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

- Val Schwein went 2-3, with three runs and a RBI.

- Scheiwiller and Allyson Schmus each had two hits and two RBIs.
