CWRU Defeats Baldwin Wallace in Game One, 11-7; Game Two Suspended Until Later Date

The 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team earned an 11-7 win over Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday afternoon in Berea, Ohio. Game two of the doubleheader has been suspended until a later date due to insufficient daylight. Game two was halted in the bottom of the fourth inning with Baldwin Wallace leading 12-8 over the Spartans.

The victory extended the Spartans winning-streak to two games, improving to 13-2 overall. The Yellow Jackets fell to 6-7 overall with the loss.

Game 1: CWRU 11, BW 7
The Case Western Reserve bats came alive for 11 runs in the first five innings of the game, including six in the second inning, to defeat the Yellow Jackets 11-7 during the first game on Tuesday. Sophomore Nicole Carty and senior Maren Waldner each hit home runs during the game, while senior Grace Tritchler smacked two home runs.

CWRU took the early lead with a two-run home run from Carty to right center that scored Tritchler. The Spartans added on in the second with a three-run homer from Waldner, and solo shot from Tritchler and then a two-run double from sophomore Melissa Cuellar to push the lead to 8-0.

BW would respond in the following half inning with two runs of their own to cut the Spartan lead to 8-2. CWRU added a run in the top of the fourth when freshman Sarah Miller reached on a fielder's choice that scored freshman Gillian Gossard.

The Yellow Jackets erupted in the bottom of the fourth to score five runs, minimizing its deficit to 9-7. However, the Spartans again responded the following half inning when Tritchler belted her second home run of the game, fourth of the season, to right center that scored Waldner. CWRU would hang on to that lead for the next innings, securing the 11-7 victory.

Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton went the distance to earn the win and improve to 5-1 on the year. Carty was two-for-three with a walk at the plate, while Waldner and Tritchler were each two-for-five with three runs batted in.

Sam Mott took the loss in game one for Baldwin Wallace, dropping to 3-5 for the campaign.

Game 2: Suspended until a Later Date
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to insufficient daylight. The game will resume at a later date, picking up where it left off in the bottom of the fourth inning.
