The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday in Emory, Virginia, coming from behind to Emory & Henry College 5-3 in the first game of the day, before the offense erupted in an 11-2 win over Susquehanna University in the late contest.

The Spartans improved to a perfect 4-0 this season with the two wins, while the Wasps dropped to 7-2 overall and the River Hawks fell to 1-3 on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 5, Emory & Henry 3
Case Western Reserve junior shortstop Nicole Doyle led the Spartans at the plate with a two-for-four performance in which she drove in runs, including the go-ahead two-run homer in the top of sixth inning.

The Spartans got on the board first with an RBI single from senior first baseman Grace Tritchler in the top of the first, but the Wasps quickly responded the next half inning to even the score at 1-1.

Emory & Henry took the lead in the fourth after a two-run homer from Madison McClanahan over the center field wall. CWRU surged back in the fifth to even the game at 3-3 after an RBI single from senior centerfielder Katie Wede and then senior second baseman Maren Waldner reached first on an error that would end up scoring Wede.

Doyle then stepped to the plate in the top of the sixth to deliver the go-ahead two-run home run to left field to secure the 5-3 Spartan victory.

Tricthler and Wede each finished the first game with a two-for-four performance at the plate with one run batted in.

Case Western Reserve collected 11 hits, en route to a 11-2 win in six innings over Susquehanna in the late game on Sunday.

The River Hawks got on the board in the top of first, but the Spartans quickly erased that deficit when they cashed in on four runs in the second. Freshman Dusstyn Reynolds started the scoring with an RBI single to drive in Waldner. CWRU added three more runs when sophomore Melissa Cuellar drilled a three-run homer to right field to give the Spartans the 4-1 lead.

Susquehanna answered in the next half inning with a run to cut their deficit to 4-2, but CWRU added three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Wede singled through the left side of the infield to score Doyle and sophomore Caitlin Smith. Tricthler followed with an RBI single to center to score Wede.

The Spartans closed out the game in the sixth when Tricthler and Waldner each drove in runs to increase the CWRU lead to 9-2.  Sophomore Nicole Carty then drilled a two-run homer to right-center field to put the run-rule into effect.
