The Washington University in St. Louis softball team celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of New York University Saturday at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis.
WashU posted an 11-1 win in five innings in game one, and then recorded a 5-1 victory in game two.
WashU finished the season with a 16-14 overall record and an 8-8 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play, while NYU fell to 20-20 and 5-11 in the UAA.
Prior to game one, WashU honored its five seniors – Maggie Clapp, Mackenzie Gauden, Ashley Madsen, Anna McKee and Hera Tang. The Class of 2018 helped guide the Bears to a 111-53 record, good for a 67.7 winning percentage, with three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2015 and 2017 UAA Championships.
WashU 11, New York 1 (Five Innings) – Game One
McKee (10-6) picked up the win in game one tossing a two-hitter with four strikeouts. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
WashU scored in its first at-bat as Tang was hit-by-pitch to drive in a run as WashU left the bases loaded.
The Bears tacked on two more runs in the second following an RBI-single by McKee with two outs. WashU left the bases loaded for the second-straight inning.
WashU put the game out of reach in the fourth by scoring seven runs on three hits and took advantage of three errors. Sophomore Hannah Bloom drove in the first run with a groundout, and then sophomore Amy Walsh singled to left to drive in two more runs. Clapp doubled to deep center to push across two more.
Walsh was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Clapp was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. New York made six errors in the loss.
WashU 5, New York 1 – Game Two
Clapp (6-6) tossed a complete-game victory allowing four hits and one earned run in game two. She struck out five and walked three en route to the 21stcomplete game of her career.
Arends singled up the middle and then Clapp drove in a run with a sac fly to give the Bears a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Flores singled down the right field line to make it 3-0 in the fourth, and then Gauden singled up the middle to drive in two in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Arends went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Walsh was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman Julia Flores also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
