From Carnegie Mellon Athletics

Carnegie Mellon University freshman women's basketball player Lisa Murphy was named the D3Hoops.com Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year for the All-Great Lakes Region Monday, March 17.

This marks the second straight year a Tartan has received rookie of the year honors from D3hoops.com as sophomore Liza Otto earned the honor last year.

The 6-1 forward led the Tartans in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. She was also named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookie of the Year and earned UAA First Team honors, which is the first for a Tartan freshman. She averaged 18.5 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game and 1.5 blocks a game, with 37 total blocks during the 2013-2014 season. Murphy also led the UAA in scoring and field-goal percentage, making 62.8% of her attempts from the field.

In UAA play, Murphy recorded nine double-doubles and finished the season with an average of 17.6 points per game and 11.1 rebounds a game. For the season, the forward collected 12 double-doubles and set new school records in points (463), field goals made (167), field-goal percentage (.628), free throws made (129) and free throws attempted (177).

Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools. There were 689 players nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.

It's the 13th season D3hoops.com has named All-Region teams, and the regional Rookie of the Year award honors the top freshman in each region.
