The #20 New York University women's basketball team came away
with a huge overtime victory on the road on Sunday afternoon,
February 2, defeating Case Western Reserve University 84-82 in
Cleveland, OH.
The Violets (16-2, 5-2 University Athletic Association) controlled
the boards and outrebounding the Spartans (7-11, 1-6 UAA) 48-36. In
addition, they bested Case Western on second chance points
25-16.
The play of the game was made by sophomore co-captain
guard Maya Wasowicz, who hit a three-pointer with
32 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 78-78.
After some stout defense by the Violets to end the second half, the
game would remaine tied and head into overtime.
"Our staff just tries to make sure that all the players are
confident and take shots no matter the time on the clock," said
Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "I think she's got
that confidence and she took the shot and made it. She's a
high-percentage shooter when she sets her feet and her teammates
did a great job of getting her the ball where she's
comfortable."
In the extra period, senior forward Alexis
Doherty would take over for NYU, scoring five of its six
points to secure the victory of the Violets. Doherty would finish
the contest with a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers, as
well as grabbing a season-high-tying nine rebounds.
"In order to lead a team you need to be able to put your teammates
on your back and make big plays," said Hall-Gregory. "The big plays
there were just offensive rebounds, contesting shots and setting
screens. Alexis has consitently done that all season for us. She's
been a catalyst and a leader making big plays and getting offensive
rebounds; just making the hustle plays. She really does provide
that senior leadership and I'm really proud for her that it showed
up in the stats today and she gets the credit."
