Emory Battles To Home Win Over Case Western Reserve

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Khadijah Sayyid led three double-figure scorers with 18 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in sparking the Emory women's basketball team to a victory over Case Western Reserve University. The Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 9-6 (1-3 UAA) following a 65-62 decision over the Spartans who slipped to 7-8 (1-3 UAA).

In a back-and-forth battle over the final 20 minutes of action, a huge four-point play by Sayyid gave the Eagles the lead for good at 60-58 with 3:31 remaining. After Brooke Orcutt made one-of-two free throws, a jumper by Sayyid with 1:06 on the clock extended Emory's lead to a 63-59.  A bucket by the Spartans with 55 ticks on the clock drew them to within two points but a basket by freshman Dumebi Egbuna put Emory up by a 65-61 count. Junior Laura Mummey knocked down a trey with eight seconds left, and when Emory turned the ball over on its ensuing possession, the Spartans launched a triple try with six seconds left that missed the mark. Case got the offensive rebound but was not able to get a shot off in the waning seconds.

Sayyid ended the night hitting seven-of-18 field goal attempts, two-of-six from three-point range, en route to her 12th double-figure scoring performance of the season. Her 11 caroms enabled her to rack up her fifth double-double of the year. Egbuna chipped in a season-high 13 points, 11 coming in the second half, and she wound up the contest converting six-of-11 from the floor.  Rounding out the double-figure scorers for Emory was sophomore Shellie Kaniut with 10 points on four-of-six field goal shooting, two-of-three from distance.

Emory connected on 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the floor compared the CWRU's 45.8 percent (22-of-48). The Eagles finished with a 38-36 edge in the rebounding department, and forced 23 Case Western turnovers that translated into 26 Emory points. The Eagles came up with 15 steals, tying their second-highest mark of the season, and were paced by Sayyid's five thefts while sophomore Michelle Bevan chipped in four.

Orcutt and Mummery tied for CWRU scoring honors with 18 points each.

Case shot 51.9 percent from the floor (14-of-27) during the opening 20 minutes of play in taking a 34-29 lead into halftime. The Spartans rattled off a 10-0 run that turned a two-point deficit into a 16-8 lead with 9:25 left in the stanza. Five points from Sayyid and four points by Shellie Kaniut sparked a 9-3 counter attack for Emory that cut the Spartans' lead to 19-17 with 6:41 remaining.  The Eagles remained within two points following a triple by sophomore Fran Sweeney but a 10-2 CWRU burst, with the first five points coming from Orcutt, gave the visitor's their biggest lead of the half at 32-22 with 2:25 left.

Emory fought back by scoring seven of the final nine points of the stanza, five from Sayyid, to narrow the gap to five points heading into the break.  Sayyid led all players with 12 first-half points, sinking five-of-seven from the floor, while also grabbing seven rebounds.  Orcutt led the CWRU scoring effort with 11 points.
