Maroons Race Past IIT 76-30

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago women's basketball team raced out to a big lead in the first half and cruised to a 76-30 victory over Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday.

The Maroons evened their record at 5-5 and the Scarlet Hawks fell to 0-13.

UChicago overpowered IIT's zone defense with constant ball movement that led to cutting layups and wide open three-pointers. The Maroons went ahead 35-3 through the opening 13 minutes, converting five treys in that time.

The home team led by at least 25 points for the rest of the game as 13 players saw court action. UChicago also exploited its size to pull down 54 rebounds compared to IIT's 28 boards. The Maroons were patient for most of the game against the zone, and the extra passes produced 23 assists out of their 31 field goals.

The non-starters contributed 50 of the team's points in the game. Three reserves reached double-digit points, led by freshman guard Katie Anderson's career-high 15 points. Anderson hit three jumpers from beyond the arc and also hustled to grab eight rebounds. Freshman forward Mary Grace Bilby posted 10 points and eight rebounds in the paint and senior Ellie Greiner added 10 points of her own in 13 minutes. Senior forward Ali Shaw led the starting unit with 10 points as well.

The 46-point margin of victory was UChicago's largest since a 95-46 win over Carnegie Mellon University on February 10, 2012. IIT turned the ball over 23 times compared to 16 turnovers by UChicago.
