Kara Hageman's Career-High 27 Points Leads CWRU to 80-79 Win at John Carroll

Tallying a career-high 27 points, sophomore forward Kara Hageman led the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team to an exciting 80-79 victory over cross-town rival John Carroll University on Monday afternoon. 

With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-6 overall, while the Blue Streaks drop to an even 6-6 for the season. 

On the road to her career-best 27 points, Hageman shot 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Hageman also tallied five assists and three steals. Junior guard Jessica McCoy recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Hillary Hellman scored 11 points and brought down eight rebounds. Senior guard Emily Young and junior guard Alex Roth each contributed 10 points a piece. Roth went three-for-three from the three-point range while also tallying a career-high six assists and three blocks.

Katlyn Spahar led the Blue Streaks with 24 points, while Sarah Cairnie recorded 20.

The Spartans took their first lead with a Hageman jumper with 5:54 left in the first quarter. For their largest lead of the game, at 3:18, Hellmann put in a lay up to put the Spartans up 20-12. Roth sunk all three of her shots from behind the arc with her last with just nine seconds left to play in the first to give CWRU a 27-21 lead. Despite some push back from the Blue Streaks in the second, the Spartans were able to maintain their lead to enter the half ahead 43-37 as Hellmann blocked a three-point shot right before the buzzer.

At the beginning of the third quarter, the Blue Streaks opened with a 6-2 run and with just 4:41 on the clock were able to tie up the game at 50-50. Hageman would hit two free throws to take back the lead, but the Blue Streaks followed up with a 14-5 run through the remainder of the quarter to rise above the Spartans 64-57. In the fourth, the Blue Streaks took their largest lead of 12 with 9:46 remaining in the game to reflect a 69-57 score. The Spartans then picked up the pace, going on a 16-0 run spanning 4:44 to take a 73-69 edge. CWRU carried this momentum through the remainder of the game to secure the win.
