From Emory University Athletics

Junior Fran Sweeney led three Emory double-figure scorers with a game-high 13 points in leading the women's basketball team to a Tuesday evening win over LaGrange College. The Eagles upped their overall record to 3-1 following a 64-47 decision over the Panthers who slipped to 2-2 on the year.

While LaGrange ended the contest with a slight edge in field goal shooting, 37.2 percent (16 of 43) to Emory's 36.8 percent (21 of 57), the Eagles knocked down seven three-point field goals, three each by Sweeney and senior Khadijah Sayyid, to LC's two, while forcing 25 Panther turnovers.

Sayyid and sophomore Dumebi Egbuna each totaled 11 points with Egbuna grabbing a team-high six rebounds while Sayyid ran her to 31 games with at least one steal, closing out the night with one theft. Egbuna was successful on five-of-seven field goal shooting and added a pair of blocked shots to the cause.  Junior Shellie Kaniut totaled nine points and tied senior Ilene Tsao for the team lead with four steals.

Emory claimed an 18-7 lead after the first quarter, closing out the final 5:52 of the stanza on 12-4 spurt, with sophomore Caroline Spurr scoring all five of her points in that stretch while Dumebi added four points. The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter, building a 14-point cushion at 25-11 with 4:46 left in the half following a bucket by Tsao. The Panthers chipped the Emory lead to nine points but Sayyid personally accounted for a 5-0 Eagle run over the final 55 seconds that gave Emory a 30-16 edge at the break.

After missing her first five field goal attempts in the first half, Sweeney bounced back, scoring all over her points over the final 20 minutes of action, going four-of-seven from the field, including three-of-five from beyond the arc. Sweeney totaled eight points in the third quarter including five during a 9-0 Emory blitz early in the third quarter that stretched its lead to 23 points, 42-19. The Eagles would lead by that margin on three more occasions, the last time with 3:07 remaining after a basket by rookie Ashley Oldshue, before closing out the frame with a 51-31 margin. Sweeney scored five points in the fourth quarter, her final three coming on a trey with 3:20 remaining that gave the Eagles a 62-40 advantage.
