From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team defeated New York University 64-60 on Friday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium to complete a sweep of the season series against the Violets.
The win raised the Spartans to 12-9 overall and to 4-6 in the University Athletic Association, while NYU dropped to 12-9 with a 2-8 overall record. The victory also moved Case Western Reserve Head Coach Jennifer Reimer just one away from matching the program's record for career victories.
Junior forward Kara Hageman scored a game-high 22 points on Friday night, shooting seven-of-16 from the floor and adding four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior guard Jess McCoy scored 16 in the game and led the team with seven rebounds and three steals, while freshman guard Kendall McConicofinished the game with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Sophomore guard/ forward Hillary Hellmann finished the game with seven points, hitting a three-pointer in the contest to match the program record of 61 made three-point shots in a season, originally set by Jasmine Rowan during the 2002-03 campaign.
The Spartans scored the final seven points in Friday's game to secure the win, and the defense held NYU without a field goal over the final 5:04 of the game. Trailing by three with 2:35 to play, Hageman hit a layup and McCoy followed with a jump shot off a turnover to give CWRU a 61-60 lead with 2:09 remaining in the game. The Violets committed three additional turnovers down the stretch of the game, and CWRU capitalized by hitting three of four free throws, locking up the win, the Spartans' third-straight victory over NYU.
The Spartans controlled the early pace of the game, building a 10 point lead with 3:09 to play in the first half after a jumper by Hageman put CWRU ahead 31-21. However, NYU would score the final six points of the first half, and the first nine of the second half, using a 15-0 run to take a 36-21 lead over the home team. Neither team would lead by more than four for the remainder of the game, with two ties and six lead changes in the second half. The Spartans would ultimately prevail though, led by McCoy, who scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half alone.
Four players scored in double figures for NYU, led by 14 apiece from Amy Harioka and Kayla Patterson.
