From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's basketball team defeated SUNY-Cortland 67-47 on Monday afternoon, January 9, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Playing their final non-conference game of the season, the Violets (10-2) never trailed. After two early ties, a 12-5 NYU run established the lead for good. The Red Dragons (5-8) did pull within one, 18-17, but the Violets ended the second quarter on a 15-6 run and took a 33-23 lead into halftime.

Both Kayla Patterson and Shaye McGoey led the way with 10 points each after the first 20 minutes.

After the Red Dragons got to within eight points, the Violets went on a 13-2 streak and produced a 19-point lead. Amy Harioka hit three three-pointers during the run as NYU took a 52-33 lead with 2:14 left in the quarter.

"You can always count on Amy," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "She continues to contribute for us."

Leading 54-36 heading into the final session, NYU increased its lead to a game-high 21 points, 65-44, on Patterson's three-point play with 3:22 remaining. The Violets never led by less than 18 the rest of the way.

Patterson finished with a game-high 21 points to lead four Violets in double-figures.

"Kayla certainly has the skill set and the size to be a great player in the UAA," Hall-Gregory explained. "We just need to do a good job getting her the ball and putting her in spots to be successful."

ETC....

- Harioka finished with 14 points, McGoey scored 12 and Mikaela Pyatt tied a career high with 10.

- Lauren Brown finished with a game-high nine rebounds for the Violets.

- Lindsey Oldshue contributed a career-high seven assists.

- Stephanie Rice led Cortland with 17 points.

"I'm glad that we got the win, but I still want us to be on edge heading into UAA play," Hall-Gregory surmised. "Everyone takes a deep breath when you win, but you have to keep a chip on your shoulder."
