The New York University women's basketball team improved to 9-1 with a 75-65 victory over Johns Hopkins University on Monday, January 2, at the Sportsplex.
NYU, ranked #17 in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll, scored the first six points of the game and led 34-29 at halftime behind an impressive offensive outburst from junior Kayla Patterson.
Patterson drained all eight of her first half field goal attempts and scored 17 points in the first 20 minutes of the contest. The Violets' defense also forced 20 turnovers in the first half, but the Blue Jays (4-6) shot 5-7 (71.4%) from three-point range to stay in the game.
"Kayla has the potential to do that every time we play," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. " She definitely rose to the occasion today."
The Violets led by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter, but a late JHU run pushed the final margin to 10 points.
Patterson finished with 24 points to lead the Violets and also grabbed a team-best-tying seven rebounds. Lillian Scott scored 24 points to pace the Hopkins offense.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Amy Harioka scored a season-high 21 points for NYU. The senior captain drained all eight of her free throw attempts.
- Shaye McGoey (12 points ) and Brown (10 points) also finished in double figures. Brown took down seven rebounds.
- NYU forced 27 turnovers against a Blue Jay squad which came into the game averaging just 15.4 on the season.
"A big part of who we are as a team is to disrupt offenses and make them uncomfortable," added Hall-Gregory. "We just need to work on doing it for a full 40 minutes."
