On a day when the 3-pointer was falling for both teams early, it was the No. 22 University of Chicago women's basketball team who used two clutch triples late to help outlast visiting Carthage College Sunday, winning 96-90 in two overtimes.

The Maroons (3-2) pulled off a tight win over the previously unbeaten Lady Reds (3-1) behind a career-high 26 points from sophomore Taylor Lake and 17 more from classmate Mia Farrell.

In total, five players reached double-figure scoring for UChicago, aided by 13 points each from Miranda Burt and Jamie Kockenmeister and 12 more from first-year Meaghan O'Hara. Not to be overlooked was the rebounding performance by junior Olariche Obi, who matched her career-best with 18, including the final two of the game after two huge defensive stops by the Maroons.

It was Lake who hit the final clutch 3 with 44 seconds left in the second overtime. After a defensive stop gave the ball back to the hosts – up one, at 91-90 – Farrell found her teammate open at the top of the key and Lake delivered, draining the shot to give her a team a four-point lead.

Farrell would close out the game at the free-throw line – she was a perfect 7-of-7 from the stripe – to seal the nonleague victory.

UChicago wouldn't have made it to the second extra period, however, without the help of another sophomore. With Carthage seemingly in control with a three-point lead (88-85) with 26 seconds left, it was Burt who came up clutch, taking another assist from Farrell (three for the game) and burying the triple from the right wing to tie the game at 88-all. She nearly won it in the first overtime, too, as her desperation attempt from just over half court just rimmed out to send the game into its final frame.

Both teams were hot from the 3-point line in the first half, with Carthage hitting 7-of-13 – four of those by Bailey Gilbert (14 total points) – and the Maroons made 9-of-17, led by three from Kockenmeister. But UChicago turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Lady Reds to just one more 3 (they finished 8-for-23 at 34.8 percent) for the game), while the Maroons ended up 13-of-27 (48.1 percent).

The 3-point show spelled an even 46-46 halftime score, with O'Hara scoring all 12 of her points in the first 20 minutes to lead UChicago.

At the end of regulation, a Carthage missed jump shot opened the door for the Maroons with four seconds left, but UChicago was unable to convert at the buzzer to send the game to extras for the first time this season.

The 13 3-pointers were just two away from the Maroons' all-time record for triples in a game, which was set at 15 against Carnegie Mellon last season. Sunday also marked the first two-overtime game by UChicago women's basketball at the Ratner Athletics Center (opened in 2003), and the 186 points scored also set a new arena record.

UChicago outrebounded the Lady Reds, 50-38, and hit 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line compared to 22-of-31 (71 percent) for Carthage.

First-year Marissa Igunbor chipped in eight points and five boards and senior Madison Dunbar dished out a team-high five assists for the Maroons.  Carthage's Madie Kaelber led all scorers with 33 points on 11-of-24 shooting.
