Rochester Tops Marymount and Moves on to Next Round in NCAA Championship

From University of Rochester Athletics

The Rochester women were able to sneak out a victory over Marymount in a defensive battle that was close until the closing minutes. Gillian Mair had a career outing while Alexandra Leslie dominated on the glass in the 53-42 UR win.

The first quarter ended 11-8 and was filled with turnovers and fouls due to the aggressive style of play from both teams.  Rochester struggled to even get on the board in the second period as it took them over seven minutes to get their first points. Layups by Leslie and two three pointers in the span of a minute by Mair helped Rochester to a 22-21 advantage going into the locker room.

The third quarter was dead even as both teams put up 12 points and headed in to the closing period with UR ahead by one. A steal and break away layup by Mair in the final minute of the third gave Rochester the momentum they needed to close this one out. UR was able to ride Leslie, Mair and Lauren Deming in the fourth to secure the victory and a berth in the sweet 16.

Mair led the scoring for Rochester with a career best 13 points. She was 3-3 from behind the arc and 5-10 from the field.

"I knew I was feeling it at that point and said to myself, I should just shoot another" said Mair, "I don't think I've heard a cheer that loud after I hit a shot so that was pretty cool, " she added.

The crowd at the Palestra was a big factor in both games it seemed for the Yellowjackets.

"The crowd seemed really intense and I think it helped drive us tonight" said Coach Jim Scheible.
