NYU Stands Second After Opening Round of UAA Championship

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's golf team completed day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, March 11. The weekend competition is being held at the Hammock Beach Golf Club in Palm Coast, FL.

Forced to play amid windy conditions, NYU shot 344 on Saturday to finish behind Washington University in St. Louis by five strokes (339). Carnegie Mellon University trails in third with a score of 359.

"We were just fighting the weather all day," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "Scores won't reflect it, but we played really well especially on our first day back."

Sophomore Jenni Bluetling steered the Violets on day one by shooting 78. That score puts the Feldafing, Germany, native in first place by two strokes as an individual.

"Unbelievable. Phenomenal round," said Johnson. "A 78 is absolutely amazing when faced with consistently howling winds."

Junior Alyssa Poentis and sophomore Patty Treevichaphan both shot a score of 84 to follow up Bluetling's performance. They placed into a four-way tie for fourth.

"An 84 under these conditions is great," Johnson added. "Great first day back for them"

RESULTS:

- Freshman Arisa Kimura posted an 85 to place eighth.

- Fellow classmate Ashley Tsoi shot 91 on Saturday for 18th place.

"It was a tough day for our first tournament back," said Johnson. "The winds were really strong. They were probably 15-30 miles per hour. We'll see what happens tomorrow."
