NYU Crowned UAA Women's Golf Champions For Second Consecutive Year

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's golf team, currently ranked #12 by Golfstat.com, captured the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship title at the Hammock Beach Golf Club in Palm Beach, FL, on Sunday, March 12.

After shooting 321 on day two, NYU finished with a score of 665 on Sunday to overcome Washington University in St. Louis' lead from day one.

"The weather today gave the team more confidence, and it showed," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "Our score dropped by 22 shots and we won by 10 strokes. We haven't had a lot of chances to play on a golf course, but we showed how great of a team we can be. Great to come back and win the tournament."

Sophomore Patty Treevichaphan earned Most Valuable Player honors due to her first-place performance over the weekend. The Bangkok, Thailand, native totaled an overall score of 159 after shooting a course-low 75 on the day.

"Unbelievable!" added Johnson. "She shot a 35 on the front. She played some great golf."

Following her strong performance on Saturday, sophomore Jenni Bluetling secured second behind her teammate shooting an overall score of 164 (78-86). On her heels was junior Alyssa Poentis in third with a score of 165 (84-81) over the weekend. She tied with Washington University's Samantha Haubenstock.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshman Ashley Tsoi trailed behind in a three-way tie for tenth by shooting 175 (91-84) over the weekend.

- Senior captain Mikalea Santos placed 19th with a score of 189 (95-94).

- Rounding out the Violets was junior Kristin Lee in 20th place. She shot a 190 (92-98) over the two-day tournament.

The Violets will return to action next Friday, March 17, at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe University in Jekyll Island, GA.

"That's going to be a really tough field," Johnson said about next week's Invitational. "We have never won there before, so it is going to be a huge tournament with some of the top teams in the country. It will be our real first test as far as where we are at this season."
