The No. 7-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team fired a first round 333 at the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championships and is currently in 11th place at the El Campeon Golf Course at Mission Inn Resort & Club.
No. 2-ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps and No. 4 Williams are tied for first with an opening round 19-over par 311. The Bears share 11th place with No. 8 Berry, No. 16 Mary Hardin Baylor and No. 18 Amherst.
WashU tied for the seventh most birdies on Tuesday with six overall as junior Chloe DiPetrillo and sophomores Samantha Haubenstock and Emily Carnes each totaled two apiece.
"We need to manage our games better as well as capitalize on our good shots while minimizing our mistakes," shared head coach Ellen Port. "Hopefully we'll climb up the leaderboard tomorrow – one shot at a time."
Haubenstock led the Bears with a seven-over par 80 which included six consecutive pars on the back-nine to close out her round. On the front-nine, she paired two birdies with four pars for a one-over par 37.
DiPetrillo was stellar for the Bears in her first trip back to the golf course since October. She completed the opening round with an eight-over par 81, minimizing her mistakes to several bogies. DiPetrillo tallied six pars while averaging 4.33 strokes on par-4 holes.
Carnes combined two birdies with five pars in route to a first day score of 85. Freshman Gigi Garcia posted a 14-over par 87, while senior Erin Drolet finished round one with a 93 to round out the Bears lineup.
