Charlie Banaszak Qualifies for Nationals to Lead Chicago at NCAA Midwest Regional

Freshman Charlie Banaszak took third place at 141 pounds to highlight the University of Chicago wrestling team's effort at the 2014 NCAA Division III Midwest Wrestling Regional on Saturday.

The Maroons finished 11th out of 12 teams in the final standings with 14.0 points. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater took first place with 130.0 points.

Banaszak came into the regional as the No. 4 seed. He dispatched his first opponent 8-2, but lost in the semifinals 5-2 to the No. 1 seed. In the consolation bracket, Banaszak rebounded with an 11-0 major decision victory to reach the third-place match. He then clinched a qualifying spot at the NCAA Championships by outlasting his opponent 6-5 to finish third in the weight class.

At 197 pounds, junior Mario Palmisano picked up one victory for the Maroons. Palmisano was the No. 8 seed and lost his opening bout via pin against the No. 1 seed. Palmisano won his next consolation match 5-2, but he was then eliminated with a 3-2 loss in the subsequent round.

Senior Jeff Tyburski also posted a 1-2 record on the day. Tyburski was the No. 7 seed at heavyweight and was pinned in his first match of the day. He followed up with a 3-1 victory in a consolation bout before losing the next match via pin.
