From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
Sophomore Brian McNamara and freshman Michael Petersen each won both of their matches, and the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team split a tri-meet with Penn State Mont Alto and host Muhlenberg College on Sunday afternoon in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The Spartans (1-2) defeated Penn State Mont Alto (2-5), 48-5, and fell to Muhlenberg (8-5), 31-11.
Versus Penn State Mont Alto, the Spartans opened with 30-0 lead due to a pin by senior captain Matt Moy at 125 (1:23), forfeit at 133 in favor of freshman Alec Hoover, two pins at 141 and 149 from freshman Andrew Hoover (4:47) and Petersen (6:36), and two wins by decision from freshman 157-pounder Ben Kring(6-2) and junior 165-pounder Connor Gordon (7-5).
A technical fall from Mont Alto was quickly cancelled out when the junior 184-pounder Cito Balsells and sophomore 197-pounder Gavin Dersh-Fisher picked up wins by forfeit to bump the lead to 42-5.The Spartans got their final points thanks to a pin (4:36) by McNamara versus Ricky Alvarez.
Versus Muhlenberg, freshman Jacob Frisch put the Spartans on the board first with an 8-1 decision over Connor McGee. The Mules then picked up two decisions to go up 6-3 before Petersen won by technical fall (7:00) versus Ben Peck to put CWRU back on top, 8-6.
Muhlenberg would win the next five matches before McNamara had a takedown against Scott Schaeffer in the final 30 seconds along with riding time that clinched the 9-8 decision win in the 285-pound draw.
