NYU Wins Finale at NWCA National Duals

From NYU Athletics

The New York University wrestling team competed at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals on Thursday, January 4, in Fort Wayne, IN.

NYU won nine of its 18 contested bouts in its first two matches of the day, but ultimately fell in each match as the squad was first defeated 23-18 by Millikin University and then by Olivet College, 28-14, in the consolation bracket. The grapplers finished strong, however, defeating Heidelberg University 31-16.

The squad's dual record now stands at 6-5 this season.

Raymond Jazikoff was the lone NYU grappler to win all three of his bouts on Thursday. The senior captain earned major decisions in each bout, defeating opponents from Millikan 9-1 and from Olivet 12-3, before wrapping up an impressive day with a 12-1 win against Heidelberg. Jazikoff, the squad's 157-pounder, is now 27-4 this season and has 16 bonus-point wins.

Matt Noble, Will Crisco, Evan Drill, and Jack La Corte each finished the day with 2-1 records.

Both of Noble's wins were bonus point victories, while Drill recorded a first period pin in the win over Heidelberg. La Corte earned a win by decision and a forfeit victory.

NYU will return to the mat next Sunday, January 14, when it takes on Muhlenberg College, Delaware Valley University and the University of Rhode Island. All three matches will take place at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY.

NOTE: Several other NYU grapplers also competed in the NUWAY Mat Mayhem Open Tournament, which was held simultaneously with the National Duals at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum. Austin Day (133 pounds) and Matthew Coppola (149 pounds) highlighted the squad's efforts in the tournament with sixth-place finishes.
