Nick Carola Captures Title at 174 to Lead Chicago at Concordia

From University of Chicago Athletics

Nick Carola captured the 174-pound title and the No. 23 University of Chicago wrestling squad earned three other Top-4 places in a stellar effort at Saturday's Concordia-Wisconsin Open.

Carola, who missed his entire first-year campaign with injury, picked up his first career tournament win at 174, defeating Wisconsin-Parkside's Job Ayala in a 8-2 decision. Carola went a perfect 5-0 on the day, recording four decision wins and one sudden-victory in the semifinals, where he topped Loras' Sam Schuler.

"Before this week, Nick had not competed for 21 months," Head Coach Leo Kocher said. "Under those circumstances, his performance was outstanding."

Also placing for the Maroons was sophomore Steve Bonsall – who nabbed third at 157 – and sophomores Kahlan Lee-Lermer and Kyle Peisker, who earned fourth place finishes at 165 and 174, respectively.

"Placers Steve, Kahlan, and Kyle had some really good wins as well," Kocher added. "This was an outing for our veterans, and as a group, they looked good. We are eager to analyze these matches and make the adjustments that will raise the ability to compete with the best in Division III."
