Maroons Take Down Elmhurst, 31-9

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago wrestling team took seven of the 10 dual matches against Elmhurst College on Tuesday night to capture a 31-9 victory.

In their first dual meet of the season, the Maroons took over after an early 6-6 tie. First-year Ryan Boncamper received a forfeit at 125 pounds before the Blue Jays tied the scoreboard with decisions at 133 and 141.

From that point, the visitors seized five matches in-a-row. Sophomore Grant Morrison took 149 by a 10-5 score line, and sophomore Steve Bonsall received a forfeit at 157. Up at 165 and 174, sophomores Kahlan Lee-Lermer and Nick Carola each tallied major decisions. Junior Jason Lynch provided the most points of the night, winning by technical fall 18-1.

Elmhurst bounced back at 197 pounds, but first-year heavyweight Will Hare secured a 7-0 shutout to end the night.

"We were a little concerned coming in – two of our starters had last season cut short with injury and had not competed for almost year," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "Another starter had not competed in 21 months. And finally we had three freshmen in our 10-man lineup. Turns out the Elmhurst team which featured three NCAA Tournament qualifiers had a couple key people out – but the coaches were pleased with what we saw. Our seven wins were dominant and our three losses were pretty close."
