The New York University wrestling team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 28-13 on Sunday, November 25, at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.

NYU, wrestling in its first dual match of the season, won at seven of 10 weight classes to defeat the #24 (National Wrestling Coaches Association poll) Ducks (2-2) for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

"That was an exciting win," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "We wrestled tough and came out on top!"

The match started at 149 pounds and Stevens raced out to a quick 6-0 lead as Brett Kaliner pinned Evan Drill late in the third period. NYU answered, however, as Sean Lyons (157 pounds), James Murdoch (165 pounds) and Scott DuPont (174 pounds) each picked up wins via decision to put the hosts in front, 9-6.

Stevens won at 184 pounds to tie the match at 9-9, but NYU once again answered, this time with four-straight wins.

Jack La Corte won via major decision at 197 pounds and Jacob Lill (Heavyweight) followed it up with a first-period fall to give NYU a comfortable 19-9 lead with three bouts left. 

John Luke DeStefano (125 pounds) battled through an injury in the third period to hold on for a 10-6 victory to clinch the win for NYU and Stevens forfeited at 133 pounds to make the score 28-9 with one bout left. 

Troy Stanich won the final bout via major decision to give Stevens four more points and make the final score 28-13.

"I'm very happy with the way we competed," added Luce. "Even in the matches we fell short, we can find some positives to take away."
