CWRU Splits Pair of Duals at Ohio Northern

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team split two duals on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio, defeating Manchester University 30-18, but falling to host #13 Ohio Northern University 44-0.

With the split, the Spartans stand at 2-1 in dual matches on the year. The Polar Bears, who defeated Manchester earlier in the day, improved to 13-0, while Manchester fell to 0-3.

Case Western Reserve started the dual with wins in the first five weight classes to lead 24-0. At 125 pounds, first-year E.J. Alizio picked up a 10-7 win by decision over Justin Brantley. First-year Art Martinez earned his first career win by technical fall, defeating Landen Dilley 18-1 in 6:03 at 141 pounds. Adding a win at 149 pounds was first-year Thomas Wagner, defeating Keagen Mabie by major decision 11-2. First-years Jacob Gregg (133 pounds) and Marty Landes (157 pounds) earned wins by forfeit to solidify the lead.

Following losses at 165, 174, and 184 pounds to make the score 24-12, senior Stephen Andryc clinched the match with a win by fall at 197 pounds. Andryc pinned Alex Searfoss in 5:19 to earn the team six points with his third pin of the season.

Against the Polar Bears, the Spartans fought hard against some of the best Division III wrestlers in the country but were unable to win a match. In the two closest matches, Martinez lost by decision 6-0 to Jacob Reed, ranked second nationally at 141 pounds, and first-year Calvin Rowan lost 4-0 to Chase Sumner, the 10th best wrestler in the country at 149 pounds.
