Spartans Sweep Mel Berry Duals at Thiel

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team swept the Mel Berry Duals at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania on Tuesday night, defeating Penn State Behrend 43-12 and besting host Thiel 25-16.

The Spartans improved to 4-1 in dual matches this season. The Lions fell to 0-8, while the Tomcats stand at 1-1 on the season.

CWRU 43, Penn State Behrend 12

First-year E.J. Alizio started the match with a 14-0 major decision at 125 pounds. The Spartans then recorded five consecutive six-point wins, including four pins. At 133 pounds, first-year Jacob Gregg pinned Zach Dellinger in 6:49, his second pin of the season. Following a forfeit at 141 pounds, first-year Calvin Rowan recorded his second pin this season at 149 pounds in 45 seconds over Hunter Savitz. Senior Mitchell Arch (157 pounds) won by fall in 2:04, and first-year John Conover (165 pounds) added a pin in 1:29. It was Arch's team-leading ninth pin in the campaign and the 51st of his career. Conover earned his fourth pin this season.

Sophomore Calvin Cai won by major decision, 12-4 at 174 pounds, over Matt Posego to increase the CWRU lead to 38-0. Competing at 197 pounds, first-year Connor Heineman earned his first career technical fall, besting Dylan Barber 17-0 in 3:21 for the team's final points of the dual.

CWRU 25, Thiel 16

Alizio started the match with a win by fall, defeating EJ McCarthy in 5:53 to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead on his fourth pin of the season. The Tomcats quickly tied the score with a pin in 1:56 at 133 pounds, but first-year Art Martinez put the Spartans ahead with an 11-5 decision at 141 pounds over Jake Alberts, his team-leading 17th win of the season.

After Thiel tied the score at 9 with an 8-2 decision at 149 pounds, Arch and first-year Marty Landes recorded two consecutive technical falls to give CWRU a 10-point lead. Landes, earning his team-high third technical fall at 157 pounds, won 25-6 in 7:00 over Landon Mead. Arch followed at 165 pounds with a 20-4 win in 6:26 over Alexander Anderson. Conover won the third consecutive match for the visitors, making the score 22-9 with a 3-1 decision over Frank Gill at 174 pounds.

With an 11-0 major decision at 187 pounds and a 3-2 decision at 197 pounds, the Tomcats came within six points of the lead heading into the final bout, trailing 22-16. However, first-year Keith Heineman clinched the match for the Spartans with a 9-6 decision at 285 pounds to end the day for CWRU.

In exhibition action, first-year Justin Sweeney recorded his first career technical fall, defeating Austin Parker 19-2.
