CWRU Head Wrestling Coach Josh Malave Announces Resignation

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University's Josh Malave has announced he will be stepping aside as the Head Wrestling Coach to pursue other opportunities outside of collegiate athletics.

"I would like to thank Amy Backus and TJ Shelton for my time at CWRU," said Malave. "It is truly a special place. Additionally, I would like to thank all my students, student-athletes, their families, and our athletic department for a wonderful three years. Go Spartans!"

Malave completed his second year at the team's helm in 2022-23 during which the squad showed marked improvement, finishing the past season with an 11-4 record in dual meets, a seven-win rise over the previous season. He was a key factor in CWRU's hosting the 2023 NCAA Division III Central Regional Championship at the Veale Center, during which he helped to guide the team to an 11th-place finish, a three-place improvement from 2022, and both Calvin Cai and Art Martinez claimed fifth-place finishes in their respective weight classes at the event. Four Spartans earned NWCA Scholar All-America honors under his tutelage, while the squad claimed Scholar All-America Team honors for the second-straight year under his watch.

"I would like to thank Josh for his service to the program and his dedication to the student-athletes over the last two years, and wish him the best in his future endeavors," said CWRU's James C. Wyant Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education TJ Shelton. "We will immediately begin the process of conducting a national search for the next head coach of the program, who can continue to build upon the trajectory that the team has been set on and maintain the rich tradition of wrestling at the University."
