University of Chicago wrestling's Cole Fibranz qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships to highlight the Maroons' performance at the 2023 NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on Saturday, hosted by Concordia-Wisconsin.   

The Maroons finished seventh as a team while Fibranz, a 285-pounder, won three-straight matches to finish third in his weight class, qualifying him for the National Championships in Roanoke, Va. on March 10-11.

After losing in the quarterfinals on day one, Fibranz pinned his next three opponents to advance to the third-place bout. In his final match of the day, he secured an 8-3 victory by decision to advance to nationals through the most difficult route. 

Griffin Seyfried (133#), UChicago's top performer on day one, fell in a close bout to open the second day, 4-2. Seyfried then dropped his rematch with the No. 4 133# wrestler in D-III to finish fourth. Ryan Fleck (149#) and Gunnar Garriques (197#) each finished fifth in their respective weight classes. Jake Hamulak (125#) placed sixth, falling in the fifth-place match by medical forfeit.
