Emory University senior defender Lauren
Gorodetsky (Palm City, FL / Jensen Beach) was named to
the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/
Continental Tire All-America Third Team, becoming just the eighth
player in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history to claim four
all-America honors over a career.
Gorodetsky is just the second Division III defender to earn the
honor four times, joining SUNY Cortland's Janine Engelhard
(1987-90) in the exclusive club. She is the first four-time
Division III all-American since SUNY Oneonta forward Mary Velan
(2004-07), and is also joined by goalkeeper Janine Szpara (Colorado
College, 1985-88), forward Anne Thorpe (Methodist University,
1987-90), goalkeeper Joan Schockow (SUNY Cortland, 1980-83),
forward Maty Velan (SUNY Oneonta, 2004-07), forward Rebecca Mouw
(Wheaton College (Ill.), 1999-02), and forward Katy Sturtz (Ohio
Wesleyan University, 1998-01) on the short list of Division III
players to claim four such awards.
Gorodetsky is one of 45 women to be named a four-time all-American
at any senior college level (NCAA Division I, II, or III or NAIA),
joining a prestigious group that includes United States Women's
National Team members such as Lauren Cheney (UCLA, 2006-09),
Michelle Akers (University of Central Florida, 1984-88), Heather
O'Reilly (University of North Carolina, 2003-06) and current
Hermann Trophy candidate Crystal Sinclair (University of North
Carolina, 2010-13).
Gorodetsky is the reigning D3Soccer.com Defender of the Year, and
was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the 2012 NCAA
Championships. Earlier in the season, she was named the
University Athletic Association's (UAA) Most Valuable Player for
the third-straight season, becoming the conference's first
three-time recipient of the honor. She is both a four-time
all-UAA and all-South Atlantic Region First Team selection, and was
previously named to the all-America Second Team in 2010 and 2011,
and to the First Team in 2012. Gorodetsky was also the only
active player selected to the UAA 25-Year Anniversary Team in
2012.
Gorodetsky anchored an Emory defense that finished the season
ranked 20th in Division III with a 0.557 goals-against average and
recorded 10 shutouts. She started all 19 games she appeared
in, adding on four goals and two assists for 10 points, including a
team-best three game-winning goals. Gorodetsky ended her
Emory career with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points, while
starting the second-most games in school history (82) and appearing
in the third most (83).
The All-America honor was the 18th won by an Eagle
in the history of the Emory Women's Soccer Program.
Gorodetsky is one of five Emory women's soccer players to earn
multiple all-America honors over a career, along with Diana Spock
(1993 and 1995), Annie Schenck (2000 and 2001), Andrea Pawliczek
(2000 and 2001), and Grace Lam (2007-08).
The Eagles completed their 2013 campaign with a 16-4-1 overall record, reaching the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships for a program-record fourth consecutive season.
