The New York University women's soccer team defeated
Richard Stockton College by a score of 1-0 on Friday, August 29, in
its first game of the 2014 season. The win came in the first of two
scheduled contests at the Cougar Classic, which is being held at
Kean University in Union, NJ.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of Olivia
Braender-Carr, who scored in her first collegiate game.
Braender-Carr's unassisted goal broke a scoreless tie in the 37th
minute. The shot came from the far right wing and the ball went
just inside the far post.
Sophomore Cassie Steinberg made three saves to increase her
career shutout total to 5.5. She was helped by a Violets' defense
that only allowed one shot in the first half.
"It was great to start the season with a hard-fought victory," said
Head Coach Michele Canning. "I'm happy that we were
able to maintain the shutout with a very solid last 20
minutes."
