In its season-opening game, the University of Chicago women's soccer team tallied two goals in the first 10 minutes to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 on Friday.

The Maroons improved to 1-0-0. The Sagehens dropped to 0-1-0.

The temperature reached into the mid 90s during the course of the game. Both teams subbed liberally and combined to use 43 players. Right off the bat, UChicago made Pomona-Pitzer feel the heat. Junior Julia Ozello deflected in a shot by fellow junior Anna Goddi to put the visitors up 1-0 five minutes in. In the 10th minute, senior Meghan Derken pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal from 10 yards out. Senior Sara Kwan was credited with the assist.

UChicago senior goalkeeper Mallory Morse played the first half and made four saves. The Maroons headed into halftime with the 2-0 advantage, while leading the shots category 8-6.

Pomona-Pitzer pressed the attack in the second half and halved the deficit at 58:04. Abby Onderwyzer Gold provided the goal with a run up the middle. However, the Maroons prevailed defensively and maintained its one-goal lead the rest of the way.

Senior Jacinda Reid took over goalie duties in the second half. She made three saves and allowed one goal. Morse (1-0-0) was credited with the victory. The Sagehens led in shots 13-8 and corner kicks were even at three per team.
