NYU Opens Season With Shutout Win

New York University's women's soccer team kicked off its season with a strong 7-0 win over Mount St. Mary College on Friday in Newburgh.

The NYU offensive explosion was led by Dominique Bevacqua, who scored a hat trick in the season opener.  

Thirteen minutes into the first half, Bevacqua scored NYU's first goal with an assist from Makenzie Rodrigues. Just two minutes later, she added her second goal to make the score 2-0.  

At 33:30, Catie Collins tallied the third goal. She was assisted by Alexa Buxbaum, who scored NYU's fourth goal less than three minutes later (36:02).  

With just over five minutes left in the first half, Hunter Hoelscher assisted Izze Ching for the Violets' fifth goal. 

Neale notched her second of the game at 40:46, assisted by Sam Scully to make the score 6-0 at halftime.  

The Violets' kept the offensive momentum going into the second half with 15 shots, eight of which were saved by Mount St. Mary goalkeeper Christina Kakavas.  

Bevacqua completed her hat trick at 89:56 on an assist from Jessica Tonthat.  

Overall, the Violets out-shot the Knights 37-5 and 21-4 in shots on goal. 

"The team came out fired up for our first game," said first-year Head Coach Scott Waddell. "We executed well in front of the goal and defended well to keep the clean sheet. Happy to start off the season with a dub. That said, we face a stern test on Sunday against a very good Vassar team. So the preparations for them begin now."
