Emory University junior Nancy Larson was named the
University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimmer of the Year, while
freshman Annelise Kowalsky was selected as the Rookie of
the Year and senior Sarah Greene the Diver of the Year,
as announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.
In addition, Emory Head Coach Jon Howell and assistant
coaches Cindy Fontana, Chris Marshalland John
Petroff were named the UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year,
while Alex Kossenkovwas selected as the Women's Diving Coach
of the Year, sharing the honor with New York University's Scott
Donie.
This is the sixth time a Howell-led coaching staff has been named
the UAA Women's Coaching Staff of the Year. It was the second
time Kossenkov has received the honor since the conference began
awarding it at the 2005 UAA Championships, also claiming the award
in 2006.
Larson swept the freestyle sprint events and was a part of four
winning relay teams. She earned individual victories in each
of the 50-yard freestyle (23.42 seconds), 100-yard freestyle (50.81
seconds) and 200-yard freestyle (1:50.86). In addition, she
contributed to a pair of UAA record-setting relay performances,
swimming the anchor leg on the Eagles' winning 400-yard medley
relay (3:46.30) and 800-yard freestyle relay (7:29.02).
Larson was the anchor leg on two other victorious Emory relays,
helping guide the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.83) and 400-yard
freestyle relay (3:26.40) to conference championships. It
marks the 15th time that an Eagle has been named
the UAA Women's Swimmer of the Year, and the fifth-consecutive
year.
Kowalsky, making her conference meet debut, set a pair of UAA
records during the weekend, winning the 200-yard individual medley
with a time of 2:03.31 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of
1:02.94. She also swam on the Eagles' UAA Champion 200-yard
medley relay team, which recorded a mark of 1:43.89. Kowalsky
becomes the ninth Emory swimmer to capture the UAA Women's Rookie
of the Year honor, and the third-straight (current
Eagles McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg and Elizabeth
Aronoff claimed the honor in 2012 and 2013, respectively).
Greene won the one-meter dive with a score of 464.00, setting a new
school record in the process. She also claimed second-place
and all-UAA honors in the three-meter dive with a score of
435.45. It marks the ninth time that an Emory diver has been
named the UAA Women's Diver of the Year, and the first time since
Lisa Parton in 2006.
The Emory women won their 16th-consecutive UAA
Championship with a score of 2,055, besting second-place Washington
(1,270 points) by 785 points. The Eagles will be back in
action this weekend at the Midwest Invitational, hosted by the
University of Chicago.
