NYU Women's Swimming & Diving Team Members Produce at UAA Championships

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's swimming and diving team made quite a splash on the second day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday, February 15.

Several team members posted NCAA cuts, while the diving team produced one winner and one Co-Coach of the Year.

Nia Sorgente captured the three-meter dive with a personal-best and NCAA-qualifying score of 437.17. Teammate Ashlie Pankonin was fourth (425.60) and Diving Coach Scott Donie was rewarded by being named UAA Co-Coach of the Year.

"It was a great contest," Donie said. "I am so proud of these divers. They put together amazing performances when we needed it most."

Due to the latest winter storm that hit both the South and Northeast, only five of the eight UAA squads were able to make it to the site (Emory, NYU, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Washington). The three other UAA squads  (Case Western Reserve, Chicago, Rochester) are competing together at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. While the competition in Atlanta is done, the Cleveland portion of the Championships will continue on Sunday. Though taking place at different venues, the times/scores are being counted against each other in all events in helping to determine the team and individual UAA champions.

However, since all the divers competing at the UAA's were present in Atlanta, those events have been scored to this point, thus Sorgente is the UAA Champion in the three-meter.
