Washington Women's Swimming & Diving Finishes As UAA Runner-Up

The Washington University in St. Louis women finished as the conference runner-up at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championships.

Due to inclement weather and travel issues for some of the teams, the UAA Championships were held at two locations Friday-Sunday, Feb. 14-16. Five of the eight UAA schools competed at Emory University in Atlanta Friday-Saturday, while Case Western Reserve University, the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester competed in a satellite UAA Championship in Cleveland Saturday-Sunday. The times from both meets were combined to determine final individual event and team scoring. Official results were announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Washington U. women scored 1,270 points to finished second in the team standings behind Emory (2,055). Chicago finished 31 points behind WUSTL for third in the women's standings, while Carnegie Mellon University took fourth with 1,137. The runner-up finish for the Bears was the team's highest conference placing since finishing second in 2008. 

The WUSTL women had eight all-UAA finishes at the meet, highlighted by junior Sara Taege who earned all-UAA honors in four events. Taege swam to a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:25.98, and added a runner-up finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.63. She also led off Washington U.'s runner-up 800-free relay, joining freshman MariMac Collins, and sophomores Kristalyn McAfee and Toireasa Rafferty-Millett to clock a time of 7:31.64. Taege, senior Chi Pham, McAfee and Collins teamed up for a third-place finish in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:29.30.

Sophomore Katie Anderson posted a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.30 to earn all-UAA honors. McAfee added a third-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.20. Sophomore Sophie Gan broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.14 to earn all-UAA honors with a third-place finish, and sophomore Hannah Lillioja also swam to all-UAA accolades in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.85 to place third.
