Emory Women In First Place After Day One of NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

In the team standings after one day, the Emory women are leading the way at 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Emory's women ended the first day with 135.5 points, leading second-place Denison University (124 points) and third-place Kenyon College (95 points).

Three Emory women claimed all-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle, with freshman Rebecca Upton placing third with a time of 4:48.14 in the preliminaries, while senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg came in seventh (4:51.37 in the preliminaries) and junior Carolyn Bonfieldeighth (4:54.24 in the preliminaries).  Senior Dana Holt claimed an honorable mention in the event, finishing 14th with a mark of 4:56.92.

Another three Eagles earned all-America honors in the women's 200-yard individual medley, led by senior Nina Zook's fourth-place finish in the event after swimming a time of 2:02.89 in the preliminaries.  Sophomore Annelise Kowalsky finished fifth in the event (2:02.62 in the preliminaries) to earn her second-straight all-America honor in the 200-yard individual medley, while freshman Ming Ong finished seventh (2:03.90 in the preliminaries) to claim her first career all-America honor.  Adding all-America honorable mentions were seniors Nancy Larson (10th place, 2:04.00 in the preliminaries) and Michelle York (15th place, 2:05.44 in the preliminaries).

Emory also finished third in the women's 200-yard medley relay, as sophomore Claire Liu, Kowalsky, sophomore Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe and Larson notched a time of 1:41.93 in the event to earn all-America honors.

Also for the Emory women, sophomores Marissa Bergh (10th place, 23.54 seconds) and Liu (12th place, 23.57 seconds in the preliminaries) each received honorable mentions in the 50-yard freestyle.

Action at the 2015 NCAA Championships will resume on Thursday, with preliminaries at 10:00 am CT and finals at 6:00 pm CT.  Events slated to be contested during the second day of competition include the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay.
