Emory Women's Swimmers Elizabeth Aronoff & Carolyn Bonfield Earn NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University seniors Elizabeth Aronoff and Carolyn Bonfield of the Swimming and Diving Team were each awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, bestowed upon student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, while also serving as leaders in the community.

The pair will each receive a one-time $7,500 scholarship, to be used for postgraduate study within three years.  Emory has now been awarded 100 postgraduate scholarships over the school's history, and its 83 since 2000 is second only to Stanford for the highest total by any NCAA member.

Aronoff, a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was a key contributor for the Eagles' program, helping the women's squad to four of their seven consecutive national crowns.  A 2014 national titlist in the 200 breaststroke, she swam a leg on the 400 medley relay team that finished first at the 2015 national championships.  A six-time All-American, she was a nine-time University Athletic Association champion and conference record holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She majored in neuroscience and behavioral biology, compiling a grade-point average of 3.92.  She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, a three-time honoree to the UAA President's Council Scholar-Athlete Team and four-time CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Bonfield, a four-year member of the program, brought home All-America honors in 2015 in 500 freestyle and as a member of the 800 freestyle relay that finished runner-up at nationals. In addition, she was a five-time Honorable Mention All-American, two-time conference champion and four-time All-UAA honoree. A team co-captain, she was part of four league championship teams and competed at the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Championships. Bonfield, an in-state product who hails from Savannah, graduated with a major in biology and a minor in theatre studies, posting a GPA of 3.70.  She was a three-time member of the UAA All-Academic Team and earned CSCAA Scholar All-America acclaim on three occasions.

The Emory's Swimming and Diving team has now seen 48 of its members win the scholarship, including 31 winners over the last 10 years.  Since 2000, the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving programs have garnered 44 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.
