Emory Women's Swimming & Diving Claims Five Event Titles to Open UAA Championships

The Emory University Women's Swimming and Diving began the University Athletic Association Championships with impressive performances across the board Thursday night, taking home event titles in all five swimming events while setting three UAA records.

With the dominant showing on Thursday, the Eagles have opened up to a 162 point lead, finishing the day with 636 total points. University of Chicago checks in behind Emory with 474 points followed by New York University (446.5), Washington University (358), Carnegie Mellon (264), Rochester (221.5), Case Western Reserve (173) and Brandeis (55).

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of seniors Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe, Marissa Bergh and sophomores Fiona Muir and Meg Taylor set the tone for the evening, touching with a UAA record time of 1:32.42 to win the Eagles' first event title of the meet. The foursome bested their preliminary time of 1:32.90, which also broke the previous UAA record.

Junior Cindy Cheng followed suit in the 500 Freestyle, claiming the top spot with a time of 4:52.20. Freshman Maria Turcan added All-UAA honors, finishing second at 4:56.47. Turcan posted the top preliminary mark during the morning session, clocking in at a personal-best 4:55.47.

Senior Annelise Kowalsky won her third career UAA championship in the 200 IM, winning the event in a time of 2:03.38. Sophomore Julia Durmer earned All-UAA honors as well in the event, touching second just .05 seconds behind Kowalsky at 2:03.43.

Muir continued Emory's outstanding opening night, earning the top spot in the 50 Freestyle to give her back-to-back UAA titles in the event. Muir swam a time of 23.16 in the finals, edging out teammate freshman Caroline Olson (23.40). In prelims, Muir broke her own UAA record of 23.29, touching with the top preliminary mark of 23.12. Taylor added All-UAA honors, finishing third at 23.58 as the Eagles swept all three top spots.

Cheng, Kowalsky, Sanchez-Aizcorbe and Muir rounded out the evening with Emory's fifth event championship, claiming gold in the 400 Medley Relay. The quartet posted a UAA record time at 3:43.35, winning the event by over two seconds.

The UAA Swimming and Diving Championships continues on Friday with preliminaries in the morning at 11:00 AM EST with the finals at 6:30 PM EST. Day three events include men's 3-Meter Diving, 200 Medley Relay, 400 Individual Medley, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and the 800 Freestyle Relay.
