Host Maroons Finish Third at UAA Championships

From University of Chicago Athetics

The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams put together a string of impressive performances to close out the four-day 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday.

The Maroon women placed third overall in the team standings with 1,440 points, which are the most points ever scored at a UAA meet by the women's squad.

After dominating the women's three-meter dive on Thursday, freshman Agnes Lo posted historic marks in the one-meter dive. Her cumulative score of 499.55 in the finals set a new school and UAA record, winning by 22 points in the process. The previous mark was held by UChicago's Becky Schmidt (496.10 in 2013). With the sweep, Lo was named the UAA Women's Diver of the Year. Sophomore Anna Girlich was an All-UAA pick with a third-place showing (457.70).

UChicago's Abbey Bernardo was recognized as UAA Women's Diving Coaching Staff of the Year at the conclusion of the meet. She had three divers in the finals of each board, with two victories and four All-UAA selections.

Senior Maya Scheidl powered her way to a new school record in the women's 100-yard freestyle. She was runner-up in a time of 51.08. Scheidl also swam a leg on the school record setting 400-yard freestyle relay. The Maroon quartet of sophomore Daria Wick, Scheidl, senior Alison Wall and sophomore Hannah Eastman blew past the old mark with a second-place time of 3:24.82.

Wall took runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke and Eastman was third in the 200-yard butterfly.
