The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving program added five All-American finishes during the second day of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving National Championships Thursday evening, including a school record runner-up finish by junior Niamh O'Grady in the 100 butterfly.
Both the WashU men and women are in sixth place after the second day of competition in Texas. The men have totaled 124 points while the women have scored 84. Emory University leads both the men's (224) and women's (330) leaderboard.
O'Grady highlighted the evening with a school record 54.13 time in the 100 butterfly, scoring 17 points with a second place finish. She improved on the record time (54.95) set by Amanda Staderman during the 2016 NCAA Championships.
The Bears men swam to All-American honors during both of the second day relays, 200 freestyle and 400 medley. The medley team of freshman Peyton Wilson, senior Michael Lagieski, sophomore Andrew Pek and junior Ross Brown earned All-American honors for the second day in a row after placing fifth in the 400 medley relay with a season-best time, 3:16.62.
The 200 freestyle relay team consisted of Brown, Lagieski, freshman Chase Van Patten and senior Justin Morrell. The group swam to a season-best time in the prelims (1:21.84) before placing seventh in the finals with a time of 1:22.49. The Bears men totaled 52 points combined with the two All-American finishes in relays.
On the women's side, senior MariMac Collins, sophomore Lauren Sapp, senior Lauren Carlos and freshman Mollie Seidner also placed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay. They swam to a slightly faster time in the prelims, 1:34.22, which qualified them for the finals seventh seed. The team earned 24 points with a time of 1:34.31 during the finals.
Junior Nicole Zanolli added her second individual All-American honor in as many days by placing sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:49.49). She posted a career-best time during the prelims when she swam to a 1:49.32 finish.
Pek and sophomore Brandon Lum earned All-American honorable mention statuses after qualifying for the 100 butterfly with top-16 times in the morning before placing ninth and 12th respectively in the finals. Pek's time of 48.76 was milliseconds away from a season-best time, while Lum finished the course in 49.03.
Carlos also swam in the 100 butterfly (57.46) for the women and finished 35th out of 40 swimmers in the prelims. She also teamed up with Zanolli, O'Grady and Sapp in the 400 medley relay finishing 17th with a time of 3:50.50.
Senior Andrew Ellison and Van Patten competed in the 200 freestyle prelims Thursday morning. Ellison finished with a career-best time, 1:41.64, finishing with the 41stbest time. Van Patten finished in 1:42.64 with the 44th best time.
