From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

Strong singles play sent the Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team past Washington University in St. Louis, 5-4, in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship tournament. The Tartans, ranked seventh in the nation, are now 15-5 on the season, while the Bears, ranked 11th nationally, are 17-5.

The Bears held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, recording wins at first and third doubles after senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won 8-3 at second singles.

Sophomore Nicolle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) evened the match score with a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles against Aly Coran before the Bears went ahead 4-2 with wins at second and fifth singles.

With three matches yet to finish, the Bears needed just one victory but the Tartans held their ground as freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) topped Kaylan Griffith, 6-4, 6-4 at sixth singles keeping the Cardinal and Gray alive.

Junior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) held a one-set advantage before dropping four straight points in her second set as Grace Deering tried to force a third set. Tsu rallied back and tied it up 6-6 before winning 7-2 in the tiebreaker to take the fourth singles match 7-5, 7-6(7-2).

Pavia, playing first singles, recorded the match point when she won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 against Rebecca Ho.
