Spartans Finish UAA Championship Strong With 8-1 Victory Over Brandeis in Fifth-Place Match

The No. 21 Case Western Reserve women's tennis team completed it season with a convincing 8-1 victory over No. 27 Brandeis University in the Fifth-Place Match at the UAA Women's Tennis Championship.

The Spartans took control early by taking a 3-0 lead in doubles. The No. 1 tandem of junior Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and freshman Nithya Kanagasegar (Crossville, Tenn./Cumberland County) won 8-6 to complete the sweep. Juniors Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) and Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) posted an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles after junior Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and sophomore Jennifer Lowe (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Djohan, playing No. 2 singles for the second consecutive day, earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win. Zargham came back from a one-set deficit to take the point at No. 3 singles, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Khadilkar completed an undefeated UAA tournament in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Berchuck earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles. Freshman Nina Cepeda (Mason, Ohio/Mason) recorded a 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 10-8 win at No. 6 singles.

"A fifth-place finish ties our best finish here at UAA's," said head coach Kirsten Gambrell. "The team should be proud of the way we fought back to defeat NYU and Brandeis after losing the first day. The competition at this event is extremely tough, which is why the UAA is the best Division III conference. We need to keep working hard to continue to move up in the conference, but we are very pleased with our performance this week."

The Spartans finished the 2014-15 season with a 13-7 mark.
