20th-Ranked Spartans Open Season With 6-3 Win Over Kenyon

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team, ranked 20th in Division III, opened up their 2016 spring season with a 6-3 win over Kenyon College at the Cleveland Skating Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans raised their record to 1-0 on the campaign with the win, while the Ladies dropped to 1-1 on the campaign.

CWRU started off the day strong, taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 advantage over Kenyon.  Picking up doubles victories were the pairings of sophomore Nithya Kanagasegar and senior Surya Khadilkar, who defeated Kenyon's Diana Aboubakare and Samantha Murphy 8-3 in the first doubles match, and junior Jennifer Lowe and senior Michelle Djohan, who picked up an 8-1 win at third doubles over Jenna Murray and Alyssa Moreau.  The Spartans' lone doubles loss came in the second match, where sophomore Nina Cepeda and senior captain Taylor Sweeney suffered an 8-6 defeat to Maggie Sweeney and Grace Winslow.

The Spartans went on to win four of the six singles matches.  Taylor Sweeney earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Maggie Sweeney at second singles, with Liu claiming a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Murray at third singles.  In the fourth singles match, Djohan picked up a three-set victory over Murphy, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Khadilkar defeated Winslow 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth singles contest.

The Spartans two losses came at first singles, where Aboubakare bested Kanagasegar, 6-2, 6-3, and at sixth singles, where sophomore Peyton Young fell to Annie Reiner, 6-4, 6-4.
