Singles Play Spurs Maroons to 5-2 Win Over Gustavus Adolphus at NCAA Championship

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago women's tennis team opened up postseason action on Friday with a 5-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

The No. 9-ranked Maroons (12-5) advances to play the host University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the regional final at 2:00 PM on Saturday. The Gusties end their season at 22-8.

UChicago fell behind 2-1 after doubles, with the first team point coming courtesy of senior Stephanie Lee and junior Tiffany Chen at No. 2 doubles. But once singles came around, the Maroons came back firing. The No. 2, 3 and 4 spots put UChicago in the driver's seat thanks to dominating straight-set wins by freshman Rachel Kim, senior Lucy Tang and Chen, respectively.

The three remaining singles bouts all went to deciding third sets to extend the day's action. Rainy weather then descended upon Wisconsin-Whitewater's campus, necessitating a move to indoor courts. After dropping a second-set tiebreaker, sophomore Ariana Iranpour would not let the clinching match elude her again as she won the third set 6-3 at the No. 1 position. With the 5-2 team decision in hand, the No. 5 and 6 positions ended as unfinished.

This is the eighth-straight year that UChicago has reached the NCAA Regional final. The Maroons are 5-2 all-time in those matches.
