Emory Opens Play at Mercer Gridiron Classic

The Emory University Women's Tennis team began play at the Mercer Gridiron Classic going a combined 4-1 in doubles action on Friday afternoon. The start of singles play which was scheduled for Friday was pushed back to Saturday due to inclement weather earlier in the day.

The Eagles are one of nine schools competing at the weekend tournament and are the only Division III program in the field. Other schools taking part in the Gridiron Classic are Division I programs Mercer, Alabama State, Florida Southern, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Florida A&M, Savannah State and NAIA affiliate Middle Georgia.

In the A doubles draw, both doubles pairs junior Bridget Harding and senior Katarina Su as well as senior Michelle Satterfield and sophomore Daniela Lopez received a bye in the first round before collecting victories in the second round. Harding and Su blanked Alabama State's Marine Cartier and Brankica Orlovic 6-0 while Satterfield and Lopez earned a 6-2 win against Georgia Southern's Ella Mosney and Nikka Gilner.

In the B doubles draw, senior Melissa Goodman and freshman Emma Perelman knocked off Mercer's Anna Sovic and Andrea Peteu 6-4 while senior Michelle DeMeo and freshman Elaine Vernoff received a first round bye. In the second round, DeMeo and Vernoff picked up a 7-6 (2) victory over Middle Georgia's Laura Cocoma and Jacqueline Heer to advance meanwhile Perelman and Goodman were bounced from competition following a 6-3 defeat to Alabama State's Irina Curcic and Gabriela Lackova.
